Meet the Danish Champion
in Car Wash Bay Floors
The Challenge
"The cars get clean, but the floors can't handle the water and salt"
KA Floors is Denmark's undisputed master in car wash bay floors, with extensive experience: renovating or constructing one to two car wash bays per week.
- The floor in a car wash bay lives a tough life, says Kim Andersen from KA Floors. Cars come in a steady stream, and most are, to put it mildly, filthy. Especially in winter, when they bring in slushy saltwater. While the car is happy to shed the salt and other chemicals, the floor can't handle it.
According to Kim Andersen, this is the main reason why concrete and tiled floors don't last. The primary issue is salt, which degrades the concrete and the grout between the tiles, causing them to loosen.
The Project
"The foundation has to be right. We chip off the tiles and grind down the concrete"
- The solution is always to lay down a DENCRYL floor or replace the concrete or tiles with DENCRYL. It's a material that's practically made for soaking in saltwater, and it lasts, says Kim Andersen.
A DENCRYL floor from DENCOAT is applied as a liquid floor, without seams or joints where water can seep through. DENCRYL is completely resistant to both saltwater and other chemicals that cars bring in.
- If the tiles are already loose, we remove them. Even if they seem secure, we almost always find water on the concrete underneath. If we find a degraded concrete floor, all loose concrete is removed, the floor is ground down, leveled, and polished.
DenCoat’s Solution
"DENCRYL floor's fast curing makes the floor drive-ready by the weekend"
Once the foundation is prepared for the next phase, it's treated with an acrylic primer, followed by a 5mm acrylic coating. Kim Andersen, being old school, does things properly:
- Most people roll out the liquid acrylic and then sprinkle quartz on top to make the surface non-slip. I mix the quartz directly into the acrylic and spread it over the floor, smoothing it out. This makes the floor much stronger and thicker. Finally, the floor gets two topcoat layers, says the master.
Including the floor preparation, where KA Floors removes tiles and degraded concrete, the work takes from Friday evening to Sunday evening to create a drive-ready floor. After that, the wash bay can have its various washing brushes and foam systems reinstalled, ensuring clean cars for customers.
